Hearing Gunshots on the Job

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the best time time to remove a tree is today, and the best time to hear gunshots while removing a tree is, well, never.

I had a job yesterday removing an old tree in a bad area of the city. By “bad area” I don’t mean an area that is so-so sketchy where I have to make sure and lock the doors to my truck. This was “bad area” where I had to actually watch my truck the whole time, it was really one of the absolute worst areas in the city.

This big tree was already down and all I had to do was cut up the tree and haul it away. When I was almost done, I heard the unmistakable, “pop! pop! pop! pop! pop!” of gunfire. And it kept going!

If a tree falls in the hood and no one is around to hear it....

Part of me didn’t give a care because if it’s my time to go, then it’s my time to go and God will say, “I need you,” and then that’s it. But it wasn’t my time to go. It was a little scary, but I did get to take home some nice cut up, seasoned wood that is ready-to-burn.

I don’t think any bullets hit my truck, but I haven’t checked yet.  For this job, I took my own personal pickup truck to the job site because I did not want to take my work van there. The work van has big letters on the side that basically say “Hi, I’m a carpenter and have lots of tools. Please rob me and take these expensive tools.” That big logo on the side of my work van is like a giant “steal from me!” target. So I took my own pickup truck to this job because I feel more safe in my truck. I have weapons in there which help me feel secure, although, I’m a carpenter, I always have weapons with me!

I think white-collar jobs could get boring because you see the same people every day and do the same thing every day, but I think hearing gunshots on the job is too far in the other direction.

What’s the scariest thing that’s happened to you on the job? Do you carry a weapon?

  1. That is nuts! I haven’t heard gunshots in public since I was a little kid (grew up in a pretty bad area).

I would probably shit myself if I randomly heard them again – especially if I was close!!

Definitely haven’t had anything exciting happen in my life of work (Financial advisor). Pretty boring.

  2. scariest thing to happen on a workday ever? 9/11. scariest current thing? Hyped up, low IQ cops with combat gear and Guard troops under the UN signia with machine guns in the subways who are always on “alert”. Unfortunately gun shots are considered normal background noise, work and home. Only weapon my municipality allows civilian me to carry is my intellect, although it is working overtime to take that away as well.

traveled here from GRS, interesting site; looking forward to getting to know you.

  3. Haven’t yet heard gunshots at work — although some days it feels like they wouldn’t be out of place.. 😉
Gunshots were not infrequent in a couple Oakland neighborhood I used to live in. One time we heard them like you described, a dozen or so in rapid-fire mode, 1 or 2 a.m. in the morning. Time to hunker down…
