The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the best time time to remove a tree is today, and the best time to hear gunshots while removing a tree is, well, never.
I had a job yesterday removing an old tree in a bad area of the city. By “bad area” I don’t mean an area that is so-so sketchy where I have to make sure and lock the doors to my truck. This was “bad area” where I had to actually watch my truck the whole time, it was really one of the absolute worst areas in the city.
This big tree was already down and all I had to do was cut up the tree and haul it away. When I was almost done, I heard the unmistakable, “pop! pop! pop! pop! pop!” of gunfire. And it kept going!
Part of me didn’t give a care because if it’s my time to go, then it’s my time to go and God will say, “I need you,” and then that’s it. But it wasn’t my time to go. It was a little scary, but I did get to take home some nice cut up, seasoned wood that is ready-to-burn.
I don’t think any bullets hit my truck, but I haven’t checked yet. For this job, I took my own personal pickup truck to the job site because I did not want to take my work van there. The work van has big letters on the side that basically say “Hi, I’m a carpenter and have lots of tools. Please rob me and take these expensive tools.” That big logo on the side of my work van is like a giant “steal from me!” target. So I took my own pickup truck to this job because I feel more safe in my truck. I have weapons in there which help me feel secure, although, I’m a carpenter, I always have weapons with me!
I think white-collar jobs could get boring because you see the same people every day and do the same thing every day, but I think hearing gunshots on the job is too far in the other direction.
What’s the scariest thing that’s happened to you on the job? Do you carry a weapon?
